As a safety precaution, and to minimise danger, certain important members of the community may require licensed close protection security. This is provided by close protection officers, commonly known as bodyguards. This protection may be from fans, criminals or specific threats such as terrorism.

VIPs that may benefit from the services of a close protection officer may include musicians, film and TV actors, athletes, celebrities, politicians, CEOs and the Royal Family. Close Protection may also be needed for relatives of the high-profile people, or in-fact by anyone, not necessarily the rich and famous, that needs personal protection.

If a hostile situation occurs, while the person is being protected, it is the job of the close security officer to diffuse the situation. Hopefully this will be done by verbal negotiation, but physical restraint of the antagonists may be required.

Close protection officers (or CPOs) will initially offer a risk assessment in order to plan and subsequently provide a bespoke solution to match the clients needs, whether chauffeuring clients, dissipating crowds or dealing with super-fans.

The security solution will take into consideration the needs of the client, including working in the clients home, or in a given property. It may also include being on-call for periods of time.

Licensed and trained CPOs typically are skilled to keep calm under pressure, remain discreet and have astute observance skills. They are highly trained to provide frontline protection from threats, which may also include tactical driving and first aid skills.

An important role for the bodyguard is to provide pre-emptive checks of property and places that can be a potential threat such as restaurants, hotels and theatres and checking vehicles. Hostile situations could be potentially diffused due to the pre-emptive checks.

Close protection professionals will work in close proximity to the client to ensure their safety. Often this also includes safe-guarding their property and discreet surveillance if needed.
