MAYBO Healthcare Standards

Aims:

We aim to enable participants to develop knowledge and skills in the prevention of violence and aggression and the management of challenging behaviour.

This is to help the work environment be a safer place for service users and their workers.

Learning Objectives:

Capricorn employees will develop awareness of being physically held by others and potential risks involved.

They will also establish a common value base that should underpin all aspects of service provision and explore the implications of these for practice.

Training Priciples:

Physical intervention is a last resort and should form part of a wider strategy for managing challenging and violent behaviour and this is a principle that all trainees are made aware of.

Trainees will learn to differentiate between escorting, touch and holding in accordance with legal boundaries and principles of good practice.

Law and Legislation:

Trainees are made to understand the laws in relation to physical intervention. These include the following:

  • Civil law/criminal law
  • Mental health act/mental capacity act
  • Human rights act
  • Health and safety at work and manual handling
  • NICE Guidelines
  • Policies and procedures
  • Reasonable force and honestly held belief in the workplace

How we maintain MAYBO Standards

Training:

We invest in new Capricorn employees to attend a mandatory 2-day Physical intervention course at our head office in Manchester.

We then deploy these staff on to locations with an experienced onsite shift mentor. This is to ensure our new starters are given the best possible training when dealing with patients with complex and challenging needs.

For our existing trained officers, they are required to complete a refresher course every 12 months to ensure compliance and any changes in legislation.
Part of this training process also includes Risk assessment and Safeguarding Training.

This encapsulates the clients Service level agreement (SLA).

Mobile Supervisor:

We currently employ 2 additional staff as Night NHS supervisors. This provides a level of service that affords us the ability to exceed current SLA’S and which ensures our staff maintain a high standard of personal appearance whilst representing the client. It also provides additional support to the client and staff, should any out of hour’s issues arise.

KPI’s:

Key performance indicators are a catalyst in our approach to ensuring that the performance of our officers are regularly monitored and reported directly to the client.

As such, these KPI’S are fundamental in providing the client with consistent reassurances for the staff deployed on their sites and their standards in appearance. Any issues identified are recorded and reported with absolute honesty and integrity.

Weekly Client Reviews:

We ensure that weekly visits are arranged with each independent NHS client and the NHS contracts manager. These visits allow an open forum to discuss positive and negative feedback in all elements of our service to the client.

All feed back is shared within our chain of command. This ensures that we continuously maintain positive and effective communication between the client, the contract manager and the staff deployed.

What our clients say:

“Over the past week, we have noticed the exemplary job the security team have been doing in protecting the Maternity area of site, especially Martin and his team.

While responding to various incidents it was noted how passionate Martin took his role within the security team and his diligence potentially prevented a security issue. In summary Martin and the security team typify all the values associated with working with iFM and our vision values (Take Charge, Look Out & Stay Safe). Well Done Martin!”

Management

iFM

“My husband had been given medication that had a paradoxical effect on him the result being that my husband  had daily aggressive outbursts.

Your staff Uzair, Hassan, Hussain and Aisha cared for my husband for around 10 days and nights and calmed him by befriending him smiling at him including him in conversations and caring for him. They cared for him as if he was a much loved family member.

Capricorn should be proud of the training their staff receive and the duty of care they provided for my husband. I will be forever grateful for the care Eddie received from your staff.”

“I just want to say what a wonderful job Martin is doing in Maternity. Martin and KC have developed a great working relationship he goes over and above to keep our staff and our unit safe.

Not only does he keep the unit safe he has made the local security behave in a more professional way. Martin is a credit to your company.
