A common question we are asked is how many security guards are needed for effective crowd control? This will obviously depend on the size of the event, but we should also consider the area and how familiar the security company is with the event visitor type.

When choosing your security guard team, it would be prudent to ensure the officers are fully qualified and licensed. This will usually include the necessary first aid qualifications.

As previously mentioned, hiring a security company that has a history of dealing with the local community, can usually be better at communicating with the crowd, in order to diffuse situations before they escalate.

Once you have chosen a security company, you will need to ask for a quote for your event or party. This is where the number of security guards will be discussed, based on the brief you give.

The two main things that will be discussed, are the venue size, and the anticipated amount of visitors attending the event. Also other factors will be discussed in relation to the number of guards needed, such as if alcohol is served, if more visitors than expected may attend or if any celebrities or VIP guests will be attending.

Security guards may also need to be placed within the crowd, to be ready to diffuse any hot spots in the crowd.

If the event is spread over a large area or has many entry and exit points, will necessitate more officers needed for the event.

It is vitally important, especially for a large event, that you are seen to place adequate security in place. If the crowd gets out of control, or there is an unforeseen emergency, and there is not enough security staff on hand to deal with the situation, then legal issues could arise.
